Knowing the Software that Runs Your Auto

Every car is now equipped with software and every year, cars become smarter and smarter. This auto software takes the guess work out of the car repair process for many mechanics and allows them to simply plug your car to a computer to get a full diagnostic. In addition, this software also controls pretty much every aspect of the control of your car, from the windshield wipers to your spark plugs and everything in between. When it comes to your car DIY auto repair books are readily available for your convenience that can explain the electrical system of your vehicle and the software that runs it. Unfortunately, learning the software inside and out isn’t the easiest task and takes years. However, just knowing a few of the simple functions of your software can alert you to any glitches that may be occurring.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

While the software may vary from model to model and make to make, there are some common factors when it comes to what the computer in your car controls. All modern auto computers control the flow of the gas, the dashboard controls, and, really, any essential (and many non-essential) aspect of your car. Your car is run by this software from the ground up and in the more luxurious models can even provide for the collision avoidance programs. Think about it this way: your car is the body; the computer is the brain; and the software is what carries the signal from the brain to the body and makes it do what it is supposed to.

DON’T JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS

Of course, having a problem in one of these areas does not necessarily indicate a problem with the software or the computer. There are many other causes for such problems that must be first ruled out such as burnt fuses or individual motors that run those specific functions. However, depending on the problem itself, it may be a good idea to take it to a local mechanic to have a diagnostic run. As an alternative, diagnostic systems can be purchased online and in stores for a fairly reasonable price.

If it turns out that your problem is simply a problem with a fuse or a burnt motor, there are many repair manuals out there that can walk you through how to make many of these repairs. At the very least, it would not hurt to pick up a repair book tailored to your specific vehicle to learn the functions of the software for your particular vehicle.
